“You mean it? I think he’s been a little lonely.”

“Of course. Tell him we’ll leave in an hour or so.” Joey began making them some breakfast while Robbie made the call. 104

Love Means … NO Boundaries

“He’s on his way over.” Robbie closed the phone and Joey looked over, seeing the smile on that sweet face. “Thank you.” “You’re welcome.” He’d do anything today to keep that look on Robbie’s face.

Joey finished making breakfast and brought their plates to the table, telling Robbie what was where on his plate as the back door opened and banged closed. “Hey, Arie. Have you had breakfast?”

“Yes, I could use a cup of coffee though.” Arie sat at the table, and Joey brought him a mug before sitting next to Robbie. “So what’s the plan for today? Robbie said we were gonna swim, so I brought my suit.”

Joey took a sip of his coffee. “Good. We’ll leave as soon as we’re finished here.” They finished their breakfast and cleaned up before getting their things together and piling into Joey’s car.

The ride took about half an hour as Joey drove them out toward Ludington State Park, stopping just outside the gate. “What are we doing?” Robbie asked as Joey parked the car, a slight hint of trepidation in his voice. “There’s a channel where the river meets Lake Michigan, and I thought we could swim in the flowing water.” Arie got out and walked toward the beach while Joey helped Robbie change into his bathing suit. “I don’t swim,” Robbie confessed. He seemed ashamed of the fact.

“Don’t worry, I’ll hold on to you the entire time.” After changing into his own suit, he helped Robbie make his way across the sand and down to the water’s edge before guiding him into the water. As they got farther out, the current swirled around their legs.

As the water got deeper, Joey held Robbie close and let the water carry them along. At first Robbie was unsure, but Joey held him close and they rode the current toward the lake before walking hand in hand back up the beach and doing it again. 105

“Having fun?” Arie inquired as they began another trip down the river.

“We sure are.” Robbie beamed as he and Joey rode the water together, laughing as they did. For Joey it was an incredible time.

Every time they floated down the river, he got to hold Robbie close, their bodies pressing together. But the best thing was the grin on Robbie’s face. He glowed just like he had the first time he’d climbed on a horse. Robbie’s ability to get the most out of each new discovery, each new experience, made them new for him too.

“When’s lunch?”

“Always thinking with your stomach, huh, Arie?” Robbie commented as Joey led him out of the water and back to the car.

They changed in the back seat and rode back toward town, talking and laughing. As he drove, Joey tried to put aside the trepidation that threatened to build inside him.
